Oracle chairman and co-founder Larry Ellison has announced (during a recent earnings call) that Oracle is looking to cope with what he called ‘a crazy situation’ by securing power from next-generation nuclear technology. Oracle is currently designing a data centre that will require more than a GWe of power, and it is going to supplied by three small nuclear reactors, SMRs.

“The location and the power place we’ve located, they’ve already got building permits for three nuclear reactors,” Ellison said. He did not disclose the precise location of the data centre or the future Small Modular Reactors but did acknowledge that they face challenges reaching the commercial stage.

• There are currently three operational small modular reactors in the world, according to the Nuclear Energy Agency. Two are in China and Russia. A test reactor is also operational in Japan.
