The Dominican Republic’s largest power generation company is to boost its output with a dual fuel combined cycle power plant based on internal combustion engines.

Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina (EGE Haina) has placed a turnkey order with Wärtsilä for the development of the power plant, which will be an identical twin to another plant on the same site.

Together the two power plants will make the largest power plant complex in the world to be delivered by Wärtsilä, and one of the largest ICE based plants anywhere.

The Quisqueya II power plant ordered by EGE Haina will feature 12 Wärtsilä 50DF generating sets in combined cycle running primarily on natural gas, but with the capability to switch to heavy fuel oil. The plant is scheduled to be fully operational during the second half of 2013, and will supply baseload electricity to the national grid.

The combustion engines will be equipped with a waste heat recovery steam generator and connected to a single steam turbine. The solution offers both flexibility and efficiency, says Wärtsilä.

Barrick Gol placed an order with Wärtsilä for the Quisqueya I power plant in September 2011. The two plants will have a combined output of 430 MW and will be constructed on the same site. They will be operated from a single control room, says Wärtsilä.
