DTE Energy is making plans for the construction of a 1.1 GW natural gas fired power plant in Michigan, USA.
The company has applied to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) for permission to build the $1 billion power plant in East China Township, Michigan. The project is part of the company’s plans to reduce carbon emissions from it power generation fleet.
DTE said it had chosen the site in East China Township because it already has the required natural gas and electric infrastructure. Construction would start in 2019, it added.
DTE is planning to reduce carbon emissions by over 80 per cent by 2050. It will retire coal plant and develop 4 GW of renewable energy.
“A fundamental transformation in the way we produce power in Michigan has already begun,” said DTE President and COO Trevor Lauer. “Last year, we announced three DTE coal-fired power plants will be retired by 2023 and replaced with cleaner, more efficient, reliable and affordable energy, including natural gas and renewable.”
