EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF-EN) is to boost its involvement in solar power through construction of one of France’s largest photovoltaic (PV) farms.

The company has announced that it has started construction of the 7 MWp project in the Malvezy industrial zone of Narbonne in southern France. The plant will be commissioned later this year and will supply the national electricity grid.

The project is part of EDF-EN’s plans to increase its presence in the solar PV field, which has become its second avenue of expansion after wind energy. The company has already commissioned projects in Italy, Spain and the USA and is aiming to build a total of 400 MWp by 2011.

Construction at the site is now entering an active phase, says EDF-EN, with installation of the structures to support the solar panels. US company First Solar is to deliver 95 000 thin film technology modules to the site in late July.
