Authorities in Ireland have given the go-ahead for construction of a 100 MW battery energy storage site in County Galway.
An Bord Pleanála has upheld planning permission for Engie’s Athenry facility, rejecting an appeal against the original decision.
The battery park at Barrettspark, Athenry will consist of up to 34 metal containers with entrances, fire suppression systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Engie applied for planning permission in 2018 and the county council’s 2019 decision to approve the project was appealed.
Engie is planning to develop the battery site in four phases, according to planning documents. It says that energy storage capacity is needed in Ireland to help the country’s grid cope with a rapid rise in renewable energy capacity.
The facility will take nine months to build.
