Guam’s state electricity company has hired Engie to build two large-scale solar-plus-storage plants to help the Micronesian island boost renewable energy capacity and reduce energy costs.
Engie EPS said that it was the successful bidder in an auction to select the developer of two solar-plus-storage ‘sunset’ projects that will deliver more than 50 MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and 300 MWh of storage.
The projects will enable solar energy produced during the day to continue supplying energy to consumers in the evening. They will also help Guam to avoid carbon dioxide emissions, and lower electricity generation costs, Engie EPS said.
Engie EPS will supply the innovative battery storage design and act as full energy storage solution provider and system integrator, supported by its strategic partner Samsung SDI.
The project is scheduled to be online in July 2022 to deliver over 85 GWh of clean dispatchable energy annually, in line with the island’s target of sourcing over 25% of energy from renewables.
