Swedish renewable energy developer Eolus has made its first move into the US solar-plus-storage market with the acquisition of a large-scale project in the western part of the USA.

The company has signed a deal to buy an unnamed 500 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project with a 250 MW battery energy storage component. The project is currently in the development stage and “located in a favourable region for renewable energy development”. The project has an interconnection queue position to deliver power to California, it added in a statement.

Eolus is a leading wind energy developer in the Nordic region. It entered the US wind sector in 2015 with the creation of Eolus North America and is planning to continue its expansion in that region.

“We are excited at the opportunity to develop a utility-scale solar project paired with battery storage that aims to fill the growing demand for low-carbon firm renewables in the US. It indicates our commitment to expanding into new technologies and to be responsive to emerging energy market signals,” said Hans-Christian Schulze, Country Manager of Eolus North America, Inc.

Eolus estimates that the project will be operable in 2022.
