Norwegian energy giant Equinor has made a proposal to the Greek government for the construction of a floating wind farm in the Aegean Sea.

ccording to the Athens News Agency, the investment plan has been discussed between the Norwegian ambassador to Greece and the Greek government.

The project would be the latest floating offshore wind development for Equinor, which is behind the Hywind floating offshore wind demonstration projects in Norway and Scotland and the proposed, commercial-scale Tampen floating wind farm in the North Sea.

According to reports, Equinor believes that conditions in the Aegean would be ideal for offshore wind because of relatively benign sea conditions and strong winds.

The proposals will be further discussed by representatives from the Norwegian government, Equinor and the Greek Wind Energy Association at a seminar in April.

Europe has taken the lead on demonstrating floating offshore wind energy technologies, with projects due to start up in Scotland, Portugal and France over the next five years.
