Final reliability testing has started at the Habibullah Coastal Power project in Quetta, Pakistan. The plant has been sponsored by Coastal Power Production Co and Habibullah Energy Ltd, each of which holds a 50 per cent stake in the plant.

The plant has a nominal rating of 140 MWe but, because of the altitude, the output will be 123 MWe. The plant was built by Fiat Avio under a turnkey contract.

The project’s sponsors recently agreed to a government request to reduce their tariff from $0.0610/kWh to $0.0517/kWh. In return, the government extended the life of the plant from 20 years to 30 years, while the Water and Power Development Authority has agreed to help the sponsors who will now need an additional ten year gas supply.
