Severe flooding due to very heavy rainfall in many areas of Jakarta and Tangerang in Indonesia during early February prompted officials of the state owned electricity company PT PLN to shut down hundreds of generators – 709 in all. 380 of them were in the Gambir district, representing all the generation capacity in the area. The main reason for the shutdown was to avoid the possibility of electrocution accidents.

The total of 709 represents 6 per cent of operational generating capacity in the region, which has nearly 11 000 generators.
