State-owned CFE of Mexico plans to increase the country’s generation capacity by more than 11.5 GWe this year through an investment of some $7.26 billion, accelerating earlier proposals. The 30 projects that are set to deliver the additional capacity are due to be completed by the end of the year. Mexico has been forced to bring forward its power development programme after unexpectedly high growth in the economy boosted power demand.

Demand growth for electricity in Mexico over the past year was 7.3 per cent reports the Electrical Energy Savings Fund, considerably more than the 6 per cent the Ministry of Energy estimated. This compared with growth of 4.9 per cent over 1999.
