Recognising that they have a limited liquid market, about six per cent of the total, to work in, German electricity exchanges LPX (Leipzig Power Exchange) and EEX (European Energy Exchange) of Frankfurt have agreed to merge the two institutions effective early in 2002. The location for the new European Energy Exchange AG has not been finally decided but it is expected to be in Leipzig. Around 90 partners from 9 countries will trade electricity at the new exchange.
