During the night of Tuesday/Wednesday 6-7 April, Voith Hydro successfully completed the transporter journey of the first stator for the expansion of the hydropower plant Töging am Inn in Bavaria. The huge component will form part of the first of three 55 MVA generators for the repowering of Töging am Inn.

The fully assembled stator with a diameter of 8.2 metres and a weight of 105 tons is the largest component, in terms of its width, ever to leave the Voith Hydro Heidenheim plant premises in the history of the company.

Because the stator was wider than the three-metre wide heavy-duty low loader by 2.5 metres on each side, traffic lights and traffic signs as well as the signal systems in a tunnel had to be dismantled along the entire planned route. And the heavy transport had to complete the 250 km journey within one night because there was no suitable parking space along the way. "The successful implementation of such a [load] only works with detailed preparation and close co-ordination with the freight company and local authorities. Because in the end, a few centimeters are decisive," said Stephan Pfeuffer, head of Shipping at Voith Hydro Heidenheim.

Upon arrival at the destination, the last obstacle, the steep descent to the powerhouse of the 100 year old power plant on the River Inn, was overcome via a specially constructed access road.

The hydro plant, which was commissioned in 1924, is located on the 23 km long Inn canal in the town of Töging, Bavaria and has been generating annually 564 600 MWh. The operator Verbund has been carrying out its reconstruction and renovation since the autumn of 2019.
