Greece’s government has announced details of the country’s first renewable energy auctions. The country will auction 600 MW of wind and solar energy in early July. The auction will be the first competitive renewable energy tender in the country and is part of a plan to attract 2.6 GW of renewable energy capacity and $3.6 billion of investment by 2020.
The government published the final rules for the tenders, outlining the timeline and size of the projects that will be awarded. The first tender will be held on July 2 and will hand out permits to build 300 MW of wind power and 300 MW of solar photovoltaics. The auctions signal a shift in policy in Greece from a feed-in tariff renewable energy support system to a competitive process, as required by EU law. The country has set a target of reaching 18 per cent of energy consumption to be met by renewables by 2020.
Greece will tender 300 MW apiece of wind and solar annually from 2018 to 2020 and will also hold two auctions for 400 MW that will pit the two technologies against one another, starting in 2019.
