Solar power project developer Hive Energy has joined forces with SE Energy Investment, a subsidiary of Shanghai Electric Group, to develop 50 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Cuba.

The two companies will build three separate PV installation in the 400 km2 Mariel Development Zone, with construction starting in late November 2018. The projects require investment of up to $60 million and are expected to start operating in autumn 2019.

According to Hive, the development of PV capacity in Cuba will reduce the country’s dependency on imports of foreign oil as well as help it to reach renewable energy targets. The project will be Cuba’s first utility-scale PV project.
