Building a UK-wide delivery network for hydrogen has taken a step forward with the start of an SGN trial at Grangemouth, UK, in partnership with INEOS.
The trial which is funded by gas distribution companies including SGN and the UK’s Energy Regulator, Ofgem, will use hydrogen supplied by INEOS in a 29km section of decommissioned natural gas pipeline between Grangemouth and an INEOS site near Edinburgh. Hydrogen supplied to the SGN project will help determine how existing gas networks can be repurposed for hydrogen.
SGN Director of Energy Futures Gus Mcintosh commented: “Our local transmission system is part of the national critical infrastructure that reaches millions of homes and businesses across the UK. So, repurposing it for hydrogen could support a hydrogen system transformation that is least cost and least disruptive to customers.”
In January, INEOS announced the next step in its plans to build a world-scale low-carbon hydrogen plant at Grangemouth as it commits to being Net Zero by 2045. This trial is expected to help improve the understanding of existing networks and their suitability to deliver hydrogen to homes and businesses as an alternative to natural gas.
