Manufacturer/retailer Ikea says it has made significant progress in its plans to reduce the environmental impact of its business with the purchase of six German wind farms from Spanish wind turbine group Gamesa.

The Swedish furniture making giant now owns enough wind power capacity to meet around ten per cent of its electricity needs, according to reports. Last year the company sealed a deal to buy four wind farms in France.

Ikea has bought the six wind farms in four locations in Germany which have a total capacity of 45.05 MW. The company’s long-term goal is to meet all of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources.

Other green initiatives undertaken by the retailer in recent years include energy efficiency improvements and the development of sustainable transport.
