India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has placed the largest single order for power transformers in the country, awarding Areva’s Transmission and Distribution division a EUR 23 million contract for a project in Haryana state.

Under the contract, Areva T&D will design, engineer, manufacture and supply a power transformers package for the Indira Gandhi Thermal Power Project in Jhajjar.

Contracts were officially exchanged at the India-France Economic Conference in Delhi, where Areva T&D also cemented a deal with another Indian utility, Powergrid, to upgrade the Bihar Sub-transmission Systems.

Under the EUR 18 million contract with Powergrid, Areva will extend the existing substations and build addition 33 kV bays in the Bihar system.

The Indira Gandhi Thermal Power Project is a 3 x 500 MW plant that has been awarded ‘Mega Power Project Status’ by the government of India.
