Japanese energy firm JERA says it will work with Fluence Energy and Lyon Group to develop large-scale energy storage projects in the Asia-Pacific region.
JERA, which operates around 66 GW of power generating capacity in Japan and 8 GW overseas, says it will work with Lyon and Fluence to explore opportunities for implementing storage solutions, focusing initially on Australia.
The three companies are planning to develop a portfolio of solar plus four-hour duration energy storage projects in Australia’s National Electricity Market. It has named Cape York in Queensland and Riverland in South Australia as sites for its first two projects.
Lyon, a developer of integrated utility-scale battery storage and renewables projects, built Australia’s first grid-connected solar PV and battery project. Fluence is developing a 30 MW energy storage project in Ballarat, Victoria.
