China is to build a thermal power plant near Shanghai at a cost of $1.22 billion. The planned plant, with four 600MW generating units, is expected to be China’s largest of its kind.

The project represents the second stage of the Jiaxing power plant, located in Pinghu city in the northern part of Zhejiang Province, eastern China. Construction of the powerhouse was due to start last December, and the station is scheduled to enter service in June 2006. The project is being supported by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and the Construction Bank of China.
