Pakistan’s K-Electric has signed an agreement with China Machinery Engineering (CMEC) for the construction of a 700 MW coal-fired power plant at Port Qasim.
The $1 billion project is part of K-Electric’s vision to diversify its power generating fuel mix and boost electricity generating capacity. China Datang Overseas Investment Company (CDTO) will also be a partner in the project.
The new plant will consist of two 350 MW units. K-Electric will contribute 30 per cent of the equity for the project.
K-electric operates a fleet of power plants with a total installed capacity of 2341 MW, and has power purchase agreements for 1021 MW with a number of IPPs.
