The Madeira River projects, Santo Antônio and Jirau São, could supply up to 10% of the national demand for electricity. Ibama set a number of condition on the development and the projects still require final regulatory approvals.
Madeira River projects get approval
Brazil’s Ibama environmental agency has given initial approval for the construction of two hydro-electric dams to be built on the longest tributary of the Amazon River, the BBC reports.
