GE and Edra Energy Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s second-largest independent power producer, have started commercial operations at Edra's new 2.2 GW power plant in Alor Gajah, Malacca, Malaysia.

Alor Gaja is the largest combined cycle power plant in the country and will provide more than 10% of its electricity demand. GE provided H-Class combined cycle plant technology including power generation equipment, digital solutions, and what is described as a ‘holistic solution’, a service agreement to manage the power generation plant and all aspects of the project’s lifecycle.

Gradual coal phase-out is being replaced largely by gas power in Malaysia. The country’s electricity demand is expected to grow from approximately 18.8 GW in 2020 to over 24 GW by 2039, while its energy transition objectives in the 12th Malaysia Plan includes phasing out coal-fired power generation, with expected 7 GW of coal power to be retired by 2033, leading to a significant increase in other energy sources including gas.

The new plant consists of three generating blocks each generating over 745 MW. Each block consists of a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine, a STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator and a heat recovery steam generator. Control and performance visibility of the GT generator will be provided by GE’s integrated Mark VIe control  system and its asset performance management (APM) suite of digital solutions. As part of the multiyear services agreement, the power generation equipment will become part of the fleet monitored by GE’s Monitoring and Diagnostics Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
