RWE says it has decided to freeze the development of the Tilbury Energy Centre in the UK.
The firm had proposed the construction of a 2500 MW gas-fired combined cycle gas turbine plant as well as flexible generation capacity at the site of the former Tilbury B power station. However, it says that current market conditions and project costs mean that the project is not currently economically viable.
RWE said in a statement that the decision had “not been taken lightly”. It added: “As with any development project, options are continuously evaluated and only progressed if they become economically viable.
“RWE will constantly explore options for how best to develop our site in Tilbury, which remains a good location for future energy options.”
RWE’s proposed plans for the Tilbury site included 100 MW of battery energy storage capacity and 300 MW of open cycle gas turbine capacity.
