The Lianyungang nuclear power plant under construction in east China’s coastal area is a very good start for the Russia-China trade and economic cooperation, as the future of the relationship depends on large projects.

Igor Rogachev, Russian ambassador to Beijing, made the remark at a ceremony marking the start of work on the project. The Lianyungang project will eventually have four pressurised water reactors, each of 1 GWe.

The project will be built in two phases. The first phase, which will consist of two units, will cost approximately $3.2 billion. The first unit will be operational in 2004, the second in 2005.
