New Zealand’s National Party opposition is promising more power stations and major changes to the electricity industry if elected.
Outlining several proposed changes to the electricity industry, the party would scrap restrictions on companies owning both generation and transmission and would focus on promoting investment in generation.
There are two major hydro schemes proposed for the top of the South Island including the Dobson scheme on the West Coast and the Wairau scheme in Marlborough. But, while the opposition intends to prioritise the Dobson scheme, coal is expected to remain firmly on the National Part agenda as is encouraging more generation and promoting more competition.
In addition, a National government would not sell any of its three generating companies in its first term and would change the regulatory framework the industry operated under.
