Oman’s first utility-scale wind farm has started supplying electricity to the grid.

The country’s Rural Areas Electricity Company (Tanweer) announced that the Dhofar wind farm came on-line in early August and was on track to start commercial operations later this year.

The 50 MW project will be equipped with 13 GE wind turbines and was developed by Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy major Masdar and financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). When completed,  the wind farm will account for 7 per cent of Dhofar Governorate’s total power demand.

The output will be sold to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP).
