132 recyclable blades made by Siemens are to be installed on 44 of the 100 SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines in RWE’s Sofia offshore wind array off the UK’s east coast. It will be the first deployment of the 108 m long B108 blades and follows successful installation in 2022 of 81 m Siemens recyclable blades at the Kaskasi project located 35 km north of the island of Heligoland in the German North Sea. RWE was the first commercial, large-scale offshore developer to install the Siemens fully recyclable blade.
The Siemens Gamesa recyclable blade technology enables full reclamation of the blade’s components at the end of the product’s lifespan: the resin, fibreglass, and wood, among others materials, are separated out using a mild acid solution.
The blades will be manufactured at Siemens Gamesa’s Hull factory, which made the first of these blades for the Kaskasi offshore wind power project.
