Car maker Renault has announced plans to build a large-scale energy storage system based on used electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Under its Advanced Battery Storage programme, Renault says it will build a 70 MW/60 MWh energy storage system that will be the largest of its kind in Europe.
The energy storage system will be installed on several sites in Germany and France, and will facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the electric grid. Installation will start in 2019, Renault said.
The company will build the storage plants using EV batteries housed in containers. It will use second-life batteries as well as new batteries that have been stored for after-sales service operations.
The sites to be used include the Renault plants in Douai and Cléon, France, and at a former coal-fired plant in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
The project is part of Renault’s plans to become a player in the smart electric and energy ecosystems, it said. Its partners include La Banque des Territoires, the Mitsui Group, Demeter (via le Fonds de Modernisation Ecologique des Transports), and The Mobility House.
