Plans for construction of a 400 MW offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island, USA, have progressed with regulatory approval of a power sales contract.
The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission (RI PUC) has given the green light for Deepwater Wind, a joint venture between Ørsted US Offshore Wind and Eversource, to sell energy from the wind farm to National Grid under a 20-year contract.
The Revolution wind project will generate around one-quarter of the electricity used by Rhode Islanders annually. It will feature up to 50 turbines installed over 25 km south of the Rhode Island coast in Deepwater Wind’s federal lease area.
Construction of the wind farm is due to start in 2020, with commercial operation slated for 2023.
