A 1200 MW merchant power plant at Saltend near Hull has begun commercial operations. The gas-fired plant, owned by Entergy, is the company’s first European power station to enter service.

Saltend generates 100 MW for a BP chemical plant adjacent to the site, which it also supplies with 120t/h of steam. The remaining power is sold into the Electricity Pool of England and Wales. The plant is operated by the Saltend Cogeneration Co, an independent power producer owned by Entergy. Entergy Power Operations UK will operate the plant under a 15 year operations and maintenance agreement.

Meanwhile a second merchant power plant, the 800 MW Damhead Creek station in Kent, has begun commissioning and startup tests. This plant is also owned by Entergy and will sell power into the Electricity Pool of England and Wales when it begins commercial operation.

Both power stations are based on Mitsubishi F-Technology gas turbines operating in either combined cycle or combined cycle-cogeneration mode with exhaust heat from the turbines captured to generate steam and electricity.
