Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has contracted to supply two onshore wind farms in South Africa. Scope of supply will include 109 RYGs of type SWT-2.3-108. These are rated 2.3 MW and have a 108 metre diameter rotor.
The 140 MW Kangnas wind farm project is located near Springbok in the Northern Cape, while the 110 MW Perdekraal East wind farm is situated 80 km northeast of Ceres in the Western Cape. A 10 year full service agreement is part of the deal..
A consortium led by Mainstream Renewable Power was awarded the contracts for the wind farms by the Department of Energy in South Africa as part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme. Supply of the wind turbines will start in early 2019, with completion planned for 2020.
These additions will bring to 850 MW the wind capacity installed by Siemens in South Africa. The current total is 324 MW, and there are two wind projects under construction that will add 280 MW between them.
Owner of the wind farms is the Mainstream Renewable Power consortium. Siemens Gamesa has already delivered several projects to Mainstream in the past, reaching a total of 498 MW. It has now established a blade factory in Tangier (2017) the first blade plant of a wind turbine manufacturer in Africa and the Middle East.
