Generation colossus, Southern Co, has announced the successful testing of coal-gasification technology that, it is hoped, will significantly reduce pollution. The so-called transport reactor, developed by Southern and Kellogg, Brown & Root, was operated as a pressurised combustor. Following the process, the gas from the coal may be used in turbine powered or fuel cell generators. The process is close to being a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of utilising the abundant coal resources in the US. Southern is expected to make a decision on developing a commercial programme for the technology early next year.
