Taiwan's government has outlined new targets for offshore wind capacity.
The country’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, said that he would be asking the Ministry of Economic Affairs to propose a plan and policies to add 10 GW of offshore capacity to the grid between 2026 and 2035.
The target would be in addition to an existing target of 5.7 GW by 2025.
Speaking at the inauguration of Orsted’s 120 MW Formosa 1 phase two offshore project, Tsai said that Taiwan wants to continue attracting overseas investment to its offshore wind sector, but added that local content requirements would be implemented in the new plan.
Formosa 1 is the first offshore wind plan built by Orsted in Asia-Pacific. Phase 1 was inaugurated in April 2017.
The second phase, completed in October 2019, includes 20 Siemens Gamesa 6 MW wind turbines. The total power generation capacity for Formosa 1 is 128 MW.
