Tanzania has formally inaugurated the Kinyerezi II combined cycle power plant near Dar es Salaam.
The 240 MW power plant is the first combined cycle facility in Tanzania and is expected to generate almost 15 per cent of the country’s electricity needs. Its start-up will also help the country to reduce dependency on oil imports.
The plant comprises six gas turbines, two steam turbines, and two heat recovery steam generators. It is owned by Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and was built by Japanese companies Sumitomo Corporation, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and Toshiba Plant Systems & Services.
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Sumitomo Mitsui Corporation provided 85 per cent of the project funding while the Nippon Export and Investment Insurance provided the political and commercial risk insurance.
