The Brazilian utility Furnas has taken delivery of two new power transformers from ABB. The units will be used to allow an additional 1500 MW to be delivered from the Itaipu power plant on the Parana river to the Sao Paulo region.
Brazil is currently experiencing an energy crisis with energy supply unable to keep pace with demand. As a consequence the government has been forced to enact legislation limiting consumption and electricity has been rationed since June 2001.
The two new power transformers are part of the Tijuco Preto substation. Each unit has a capacity of 550 MVA and 765 kV. The extra-high voltage transformers weigh around 280 tonnes each.
Under pressure because of the growing demand, ABB was able to complete and install the units eight months after the order was placed.
