Danish power plant firm Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC) has signed contracts with Alstom for the supply of equipment for two biomass power plants in the UK.
Under the contracts, Alstom will supply geared reaction steam turbines to a waste wood combined heat and power (CHP) project in Merseyside and a biomass plant in East Anglia that will burn energy crops as a fuel.
The Widnes, Merseyside plant will use a 23 MW steam turbine while the Snetterton biomass plant in East Anglia will use a 50 MW unit. The Widnes project is being developed by BWSC in partnership with UK logistics firm Stobart Group.
The Widnes facility is expected to start operating at the end of 2016 and will provide electricity to the grid as well as heat for Stobart’s adjacent wood-drying facility. The Snetterton scheme is scheduled to be operational by spring 2017.
