The UK government is to introduce what it has called a new deal for hydropower with measures to broaden the scope for research and development to include environmental protection for hydropower projects and to allow all new hydropower projects to be classified under the planned renewables obligation. The move is expected to lead to the refurbishment of around 30 hydroelectric schemes and an investment of around $375 m.
