The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has awarded a $1.05 million grant to the developers of Zambia’s first wind farm.
Access Power and EREN Renewable Energy are developing the proposed 130 MW Pensulo wind farm in Zambia’s northern Copperbelt Province. The USTDA funds will support a feasibility study into the project.
According to the USTDA, Access Zambia will competitively choose an American company to complete the feasibility study of the wind project, which could come on line by 2019.
USTDA Acting Director Thomas R. Hardy said: “USTDA is pleased to support this important project that will help diversify Zambia’s energy generation mix. The project will create opportunities for US exports in a new and growing sector in Zambia.”
The Pensulo wind farm will be owned and operated by Access and EREN and will add around six per cent to Zambia’s installed capacity.
