Utilities owned by Cinergy Corp are to see some $700 million invested over the next three years to reduce emissions of NOx from coal-fired generation plant.

The utility units, Cincinnati Gas & Electric and PSI Energy, together own 10 coal-fired stations, of which eight are to receive emissions control equipment. At five of plants the control equipment will be of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) type, to be supplied by Siemens, that are expected to reduce NOx emissions by as much as 90 per cent.

The installations will be phased in over the coming years to 2004 in order to meet stringent new emissions limits. In addition to the SCRs, Cinergy is also examining other types of emissions control equipment as well as improved combustion techniques.

Similarly, American Electric Power (AEP) and Fuel Tech have reached an agreement to cut emissions of NOx from coal-fired plants owned by AEP in the Midwestern USA.

Here, Fuel Tech will supply a Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) equipment system, although AEP has yet to decide which of its more than 25 GW of generation facilities will have the equipment installled. The financial terms of the Fuel Tech deal were not disclosed.
