A cement firm in Saudi Arabia has placed a fast-track order with Wärtsilä for a 47 MW captive power plant.

Wärtsilä will build the new plant at a cement factory owned by Umm Al-Qura Cement Company in a mountain desert close to Taif city. The equipment will be delivered by February 2015 and commercial operation will start by October 2015.

The plant will consist of five 20-cylinder 32TS engines, a new 2-stage turbocharged version of the Wärtsilä 32 series. This new engine is designed to operate at high efficiencies even in extreme ambient conditions, such as high temperatures and high altitudes.

The new plant will operate at an altitude of over 1000 m and at temperatures of up to 50°C. "This engine is tailor-made for hot conditions. That’s why we call it the "sauna" engine," said Lars-Åke Kjell, Regional Director at Wärtsilä Power Plants.
