Wärtsilä has signed a contract to engineer, manufacture and deliver a 130 MW Flexicycle plant in Senegal for Matelec.

Matelec is building the Malicounda power plant under contract to Melec Power Gen (MPG), and independent power producer (IPP). Located in Mbour, 85 km from Dakar, the Malicounda facility will boost power generation supplies in Senegal and is due to start operating in 2020.

Wärtsilä’s Flexicycle power plants combine a gas, multi-fuel, or liquid fuel power plant with a steam turbine. They can operate both in highly efficient combined cycle mode and in dynamic and fast simple cycle mode.

The Malicounda power plant will be based on seven Wärtsilä 50 engines operating initially on heavy fuel oil (HFO). The deal includes an option to convert to gas fuelled operation as soon as gas becomes available. Senegal and Mauritania have signed an inter-governmental cooperation agreement to develop substantial gas resources to be shared by the two countries.
